What is Yerba Mate?

Yerba mate is a tea made from the leaves of the holly plant. It traditionally comes from South America and was first used by the native Guarani. Yerba has a strong natural flavor, and is very smooth and bitter. Yerba mate from The Mate Exchange is sourced from Brazil, and is available in unique flavors that you cannot buy anywhere else.

Yerba Mate contains a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants but of primary concern are those compounds that act as stimulants. Yerba Mate contains both caffeine and theobromine, acting as either a quick wake up or sustained energy. Here at The Mate Exchange we have found that this provides the perfect amount of energy to let us study before a major exam, make it through a workout, or stay up late developing new flavors of Yerba Mate. It quickly becomes clear why the Guarani used Yerba Mate to make it through periods of famine.
Yerba Mate is a powerful drink with a rich heritage. Originally, the Guarani believed that the Yerba Mate tree was a godly gift for their righteousness and humility. It was these tribes who first cultivated the tree and drank its leaves in ceremonies. This ceremony was performed daily, helping these tribes not only to stay healthy and energized but also to build community among their members.

The Mate Exchange strives to bring this tradition to the United States in a modern form to allow our customers to gain the same benefits the Guarani discovered came along with Yerba Mate. Watch this video, and subscribe to our Youtube Channel to learn more.
